This wave of hydrolyis around the ring is associated with a rotation of each subunit in the plane of the ring. The result of this is that the loops proposed to bind DNA oscillate up and down along the axis of the hexamer. This can be seen by looking at the concerted movement of the loops in three of the subunits.

The loops make an oar-like motion during the catalytic cycle. It is possible that this movement of the loops is associated with the translocation activity of the enzyme along a strand of DNA.
